The Wave and the Ocean: The Multidimensional Heart

We can access broadly three levels of identity in and through the heart area:

  • ego
  • soul
  • self or no self

Wave and Ocean example

Level 1 – Ego

In the ocean is the tip of the wave – it’s our ego identity as a separate self, from this perspective all life is brief, turbulent and achingly separate

All we see is an endless view of wave tips, living in a world of separation and full of anxiety, these wave tips eventually disappear and we realise a similar fate will also arise for us one day

Beneath us all we know is a terrifying abyss

Critical distinction between being egocentric self-centred disconnected and being individuated differentiated. We wear our costumes of social identity lightly discard them a moments notice this frees to be spontaneous unique creative in our expression. Less is more

Discover a world that is not self-serving

there is a way of acting which is neither aggressive or passive
as attention shifts to the heart area were able to pack in a more responsive and responsible way

thoughts about what other people think about us are mostly projections about what we think about ourselves

As we stop judging ourselves we stop judging others

How our shadow teaches us:

Rage disguised as an inherent power
Shame shows innocence and its core
And terror offers a direct path to fearlessness
our shadows bear essential radiance

Level 2 – Soul

The soul level is an intermediary level between ego and self
often overlooked
when we are tuned into this level we feel ourselves moving with a greater flow
need to be careful we don’t think we are special otherwise we run the risk of inflating ourselves and becoming fixated on our importance
self honesty and vulnerability helpless to avoid this trap

the soul level is where the wave meets the ocean

We can sense sutler deeper levels of movement here
we can sense this is a portal at the very back of the heart

Level 3 – the self or no self

Is unbounded and infinite
unlike any worldly ocean that has a limit no matter how vast

the great or universal heart

calling it self points to its every thingness
calling no self points to its nothingness or emptiness

Both are true depending on whether we are looking from the perspective of love or wisdom
Love says that I am everything, wisdom says I am nothing
between the two my life flows

Be careful here when you start to think I am enlightened

Awakening is never personal awareness awakens to itself

In the end where both the wave and the ocean, form and formless

unveiling the heart we are both wounded and whole

We can have glimpses or profound openings at any moment

Spiritual realisation does not necessarily translate into psychological maturity

We have discovered that these are somewhat semi-independent lines of development
